Throat Punch Thursday. Period.

This is my very first Throat Punch Thursday post ever. Not that I haven't kicked a few people or things in the junk before but this is actually me pissed off at Thursday itself.

Especially this Thursday.

1. Sick Kid

My son is sick. It started with allergies which then developed into a chest cold. Ninja Poke to the Eye, Cold.

2. Period

I have it. Which means irritability, pimples and back cramps. And worse - I'm obviously not pregnant. Thanks for being a dick, period.

3. Musical Doodle

That dang Musical Doodle song from Spongebob is stuck in my head. I really need to turn the tv off after dropping off E in the morning so that I don't end up seeing random cartoons with catchy songs.

4. Rain

It's supposed to rain today. Which is cool, because I like rain, but not cool because my husband has not covered the spot on the damaged car where the door no longer meets the roof, so it will probably leak.

So suck it, Thursday. Soon you'll be gone and Friday will take your place. And Friday sounds like a way cooler dude.

From now on I will be saving most of my rant-like posts for Thursdays, so tune in there if you want to grab your pitchforks and satisfy your need to join a lynch mob.

Once I have a few days to myself again (next week) I will be doing my full transfer over to Wordpress - stay tuned for the official post!

That was &#@$ing Weird

Yesterday morning as I was loading E into his car seat for our drive to preschool, we had a little conversation about the weather. It went like this:

Sunshine on my Blog Face!

So Jennifer over at Mamawolfe gave me a Sunshine Award! Cuz I make people happy about all the things!

I am pretty happy to get this because (1) it's a pretty picture and it reminds me of my yard outside that I am ignoring because I am inside glued to my laptop as if it were a giant block of crack with a keyboard on it and (2) it feels super warm and fuzzy that someone enjoys my weird posts in the way that I intend.

So thank you Jennifer! Go pop by her blog - her writing is delightful and if you check out her About Me you will see that she is also pretty hot ;)  If you just read that in a creepy way then do not go over there. Leave her alone, you stalker.

Now - on to the questions that I must answer, for said award requires me to reveal some deets to you.

The Long Hair Cold War

Does your husband/boyfriend/girlfriend love long hair. Do you want to cut your hair off but are concerned that your significant other will wither up and die from disappointment? Trimming your tresses will prompt his soul to shatter into a thousand little hair sized shards on the salon floor?

Well ladies (and gents, if that's how you roll) I have been staging a cold war against R on this for a while now and I am willing to share my battle plans and tactics for I think that I am finally breaking him. Oh, he'll deny it, but how much more can he really take?

If you really want to get rid of your hair you are going to have to commit. And commit hard. Consistency is key. You're going to have to do some things that will even gross out your dog. But do it you will, because you are fighters!

That was a disappointing talk about politics.

Wednesday was the big Iowa Republican Caucus. As it turns out a bunch of people who God told to run didn't actually win *coughcoughMicheleBachmanncough*. As someone said, "God is hilarious".

That's about the only funny thing about this US election stuff.

I honestly don't know how the US election system got so ridiculously convoluted. I'm from Canada and you basically have to pay attention to the campaigns for about 3 months. Then you make your decision and done! Unless there is a minority and then you do that more often than normal. So I'm going off about it to R the other night...

Me: How the hell do people here in the US wade through 2 years of campaigning and caucuses and primaries and blah blah blah. It's ridiculous! Who can even remember what candidate said what? They could say something different every 6 months and you have to rely on pundits to catch them! It's crazy how...

THWAP!

Piece of tanbark to the face.

R: Oh my god! hahahahahahhahaha!

Me: What the hell was that?

R: Sorry sorry, hahahahahha tan...hahahahahhahaah bark.... AHHHHhahhahahahah

I shit you not, as I was going off on a soapbox rant about the confusing political electoral system in the US, an important topic for debate, my husband, sprawled out on the couch, eyes a piece of tanbark that my son had probably emptied out of a pocket or shoe or his underwear, laying on the end of the chaise. So R delicately angles a toe at it and *flicks* it off the couch. Hard. With his foot. And it hits my cheek right below my zombie eye. Like I don't already have enough problems

Side note - sub-conjunctival eyeball hemorrhage looks way creepier if you have blue irises than if you have brown ones.

So then I thought to myself, what if, every time some asshat politician were lying or otherwise trying to persuade us with less-than-truthisms, a designated bark flipper could just ping him/her in the face with a little piece of tan bark.

"Obama care is a government conspiracy to kill the elderly.." THWAP!
"Gay people shouldn't be allowed.." THWAP!
"I did not have relations.." THWAP THWAP!

Yeah. I'd watch way more of the debates on tv.

By the way - I got a big fat O on my ovulation test this morning. That means 'no ovulation' to the layman. If I were ovulating it would be a big shining happy face. I guess they decided that a blank O was better than a sad face.

I'm sick of Christmas.

Wait, I love Christmas. Before it gets here. Then I love Christmas Day. And then I just want it to go away so I can get back to normal.

Since Ender's preschool is closed until January 3, however, I must endure another whole week of finding things to do with him so that he doesn't get bored.

Normally it's not such a big deal to just head out and play with him at a park since we are lucky enough to live in a warmer climate. I feel the pain of all you moms out there who might be stuck inside the house the whole time. But I'm *tired*. All the rich, sweet, fatty (and delicious!) food, all the excitement of Santa coming, the mess in the house, the incessant demands to play with each and every new toy several times a day - it's exhausting!

Mommy needs a nap, Christmas. So could you just keep it down and come back next December? K thanks.

Oh - and New Years? I'll let you know if I'm free. I might be, uh, booked this year. At home. In bed. Sleeping.

Kiss a stranger for me.

The R Word

When I was a little kid we called people 'retarded'. It wasn't meant to be hurtful to actual mentally challenged people. We just didn't think of it that way. It was sometimes meant to point out when someone did something out of ignorance, which refers to the state of being uninformed.

OMG! News Flash!

It turns out that I am not a doctor! That is all. Go about your day :)

Red Circle with Diagonal Line indicating
that I am, indeed, not a doctor.
...

Are you still here? That's it. That's all I had for you this morning. Shoo.

...

Ok really? A battle of wills? Alright then. I admire your dogged determination:

Not to be confused with:

But since you stuck around so long I guess I could tell you a joke or something.

So here goes:

Two guys walked into a bar.
The third guy ducked.

Ba dum dum! Ting!

Alright, that's it. You really have to go now. We've got things to do today, you and I. Have a great one :)

March 14 - Steak & BJs?

I just found out through the Scary Mommy forums that March 14 is designated as Steak and BJ day for men. Why have I never heard of this? I was both intrigued and annoyed when I made the discovery because (a) how did something like this escape my notice; and (b) was there an equivalent day for women*?

You ate the LAST Oreo? Choose your weapon, Sir!

My husband (R) has been working a ton lately including a lot of late nights or heading out of town on business. My son, E, has been very sensitive to the Daddy-absences over the past few weeks.

The little guy is normally not much of a stickler for protocol, so a five minute warning is enough to ease his transitions (moving from one activity to another) but when he gets into a funk over Daddy being away or hits a developmental milestone he does a complete about face and routine becomes all important.

During these crunch times when I'm already at the end of my single-parenting, work-widowed rope, if you screw with our plans and upset our boat you will likely be staring at the business end of a 3 year old's hissy fit and then I have to kill you. I'm not kidding, I will cut you.

English: Different sizes of Oreo cookies. From...
Image via Wikipedia

Part of said routine is that E and I have a little cookie and milk snack every day when he comes home from preschool. So when one day this week we came home to find that someone (not me!) had eaten the last Oreo, the proverbial shit hit the fan.

Too tired to deal with a spazzing kid, I ended up baking gingerbread cookies which was really fun aside from the little beads of sweat popping out of my forehead at the possibility of E remembering he wanted Oreos. Please Flying Spaghetti Monster, let the gingerbread be enough!

Before you raise an eyebrow at my fear of a three year old child, you Judgey Judgersons, let me say that I don't usually feel that vulnerable to his demands. However, this day I was super tired, worn out and looking to avoid any hassle altogether, from anyone.

Once I had him settled in with some cars to play with, you know what happened next! Using the most powerful means available to a nagging wife - text and email - I took all my frustration out on R, who was probably sitting in a meeting blissfully ignorant of just how shit things had turned at home because he ate the last freaking Oreo!!! Blarg! Eventually (in an attempt to stop the barrage) he wisely suggested that he would, late at night and on his way home, stop at the store to pick up more Oreos.

Since he was stopping anyways I asked him to pick up some dark chocolate for making 'Healthy Fudge' this weekend. (Look for a post on Sunday with the recipe, it's really good.) He usually picks up anything else we need while he's at it.

The next morning I woke up and stumbled into the kitchen to put on some coffee before my boys got up. On the counter was placed a single bag from the grocery store. As I peered inside I saw two packs of Oreos - double-stuffed - and four bars of dark chocolate. That's it. Nothing else.

So naturally, when my husband sauntered out of the bedroom and flopped onto the couch, I pointed at the bag of cookies and chocolate and asked, "Did the cashier ask if you were on your period? Seriously, this looks like a PMS supply kit. Is there something about you I should know?"

He laughed, snorting a little. Which I LOVE. I really do, I'm not even being sarcastic. R has the best over-tired laugh of anyone I've ever met, bar none.

And then in reply he said, "I just figured you'd need it soon...."

Well played, sir.

Do you have little rituals that you do with your child? Or with your husband? Do you use routine to save yourself if your husband travels or works long hours? What happens when your routine gets shot to hell?

All I want for Christmas is Me

Oh hi there. Yes, you, over there - with the Lululemon pants and the Starbucks.
You look like a fit, healthy, well-rested modern day woman who gets to the yoga studio and has amazing girls' nights out with your equally awesome friends.
Um, this may be a little awkward, but have you seen my butt? It was last seen about 4 years ago heading home from a Yin class in Yaletown, wrapped in a pair of tight black yoga pants and securing numerous stares and compliments from passersby.
I thought you may know where it is, since you seem to travel in the same circles as my butt did.

Yin
This came up when I searched for 'Yin'
so I had to include it.

Does this conversation sound familiar? Do you wonder where your butt went? Your nice, tight booty, perky boobs, glowing complexion and expensively colored and styled hair left you when you had your kids? Your manicure and your pedicure and waxed legs, pits, eyebrows and bikini line hit the road when you stopped getting a full night of sleep and had no time to waste on silly things like self-grooming?

Well this year I've decided that unlike the usual vapid Christmas list, I'm going for broke. That's right - I want ME back!

A bunch of things need to happen to effect my desired result so I spent a good amount of time thinking about it and narrowed it down to 10 things. My list is compiled in order of importance but that mostly just indicates which 'surprise!' gift certificates I want to open first.

Husband! Listen up!

1. Professional hair color/cut at the uber hair salon that I used to frequent.

2. Mani/pedi including reflexology.

3. Hour long massage at a spa complete with cucumbers on my eyes, a facial and a fluffy robe. And little sandwiches, juice and a fruit plate.

4. Two or three really good nights of sleep. Uninterrupted by man, dog, child or alarm.

5. A trip to the MAC store for makeup application and the product that goes with it.

6. Full body waxing. Ok not the entire body but all the gross bits.

7. Dinner out with a few girlfriends. Including wine and a taxi home. Or limo if you want to go all out.

8. Time each week to go running or to the gym, at least one evening a week. That includes childcare.

9. A personalized full service bra fitting complete with new bras.

10. A stylus and illustrator program so I can ignore everyone and hide out in the office making funny
pictures and giggling maniacally to myself.

That's it! Please please please, I've been such a good girl this year. I've been covered in poop and food. I've endured tantrums and work stresses and a bad dog. A fucking TREE FELL ON MY CAR. I deserve this. I need this.

And if you see my butt can you please tell it I miss it and I've love for it to come home. Don't forget to mention that I will really commit this time - lots of squats and lunges, as many as it needs.

Word Battle - Potty Accident

Today's word battle is brought to you by the wonderful Ender.

When I picked Ender up from school yesterday he was conspicuously wearing the spare pants and underwear that had been tucked into his backpack and stored in his classroom cubby.

I was hoping against hope that some pant destroying tragedy such as spilled juice, a knocked over water activity, half a Santa cut-out stuck to his butt from the art table or anything, really, that doesn't involve bodily fluids would turn out to be responsible.

The fact-finding mission went like this:

Me: Hey buddy - how come you're wearing your spare joggies?

E:  I peed in my pants.

Me: How come?

E: I had an accident.

Me: Ok, honey, I get that, but why?

E: Because I didn't go to the bathroom to pee.

Me: I see where you're going with that. But why did you go in your pants instead of in the potty?

E: Oh. It was too bright outside.

Pardon?

Me: Too bright out? I don't understand...

E: I was outside playing and I had to pee and when I looked at the door to the classroom, to go inside to go to the potty, the sun was very very bright in my eyes and I could not see the door! So I couldn't go inside the door to pee.

Me: So - you couldn't get inside to pee because the sun was hurting your eyes?

E: Yes, mommy. It was very very bright.

Me: Well. I have to give you points for creativity. But tomorrow, just ask a teacher to help ok?

E: Ok mommy. Maybe they will have sunglasses or something.

Let's hope...

What is the funniest or most creative reason or excuse your little one has given for having an accident? There has to be some good ones out there and I want to hear them!

Night & Day: The Park

You know this guy.

Night & Day: The Spray Park Next Door

I'm compelled to do a sort of Wordless Wednesday thingamajig. But instead of taking photos and posting them every Wednesday, I think I'm going to wow you all with my brilliant artistic ability and submit a series of drawings entitled 'Night & Day'.

Prepare to be amazed.
